Where did the Fire Flies Go?

t

I remember growing up in New York and chasing fireflies when I was a child.   It was in the warm summer months that I sat on my front porch during the evening hours and enjoyed the festival of night lights as those little beetles produced their glow, it looked so beautiful to me.
Now I live in North Florida and although this species likes to feed on snails, worms and other bugs etc... you would think my back yard would be heaven to them, I have yet to see a fire fly here.  My little boy has never seen an actual fire fly, and I wish so much to show him the beauty of God's creation.  I have read in several places that there is a decline on these little beetles.  It makes me sad to know that these little critters may be endangered.   Read on possible reasons for decline here.  So if you are lucky enough to have fire flies in your area, share it with us.

  2. You know, when I was a kid we used to go out and catch fireflies almost every night, there were just tons of them flying around. Now my daughter has seen them a handful of times, but there are always just 1 or 2 out. We were just wondering if there was a decline in the species recently.

Thanks for the follow at MommyIsCrafty, I'm following you back!

  5. I seriously noticed this last night... I've seen ONE firefly all summer! I was in the pool and saw it. Which made me wonder where they all went. I just chalked it up to the weird weather we've been having the last 2 years or so... Nice to know someone else has noticed...

It made me sad when I realized my kiddo's never seen one either. He gets excited chasing regular flies during the day. Imagine how much he'll love the ones he can see at night! Lol.

    Have a great week!

  6. thanks for linking up! We have a lot of fireflies in the hottest of the summer months. I think this year my son will actually be old enough to go out to catch them.
