Random Musings

A random day filled with nothing but beauty.

1- Signs of Spring

The work of our creator....

Lovely Daffodil.

His favorite collection.

It is a delight exploring the first signs of spring with my little one and scouting all the new colors that it brings.
I know that some places are still getting snow, but for the warmer areas, hope that you can find signs of spring in your location.

2- Healthy Eating

I have a love for greens and I have been enjoying so many wonderful salads recently.  We enjoy this one at home; greens, a splash of color with tasty strawberries, grilled chicken strips, some crunch with almonds and baby carrots and a bit of goat cheese.  You need an acquired taste for this particular cheese:-)  It is such a mix of flavor when you combine fruits and greens in a salad.  Tasty!

3-  The Red Balloon

If you were born in the early 70s, then perhaps you may remember watching The Red Balloon in school.  It is one of our favorites here at home.  I remember how captivating it was;  It moved every sense of feeling inside, happiness, laughter, sadness and so much more.  This 1956 short film was directed by  Albert Lamorisse
and filmed in Paris, France.  It won numerous awards including an Oscar for best original screenplay. This film is only 34 minutes long and follows the adventure of a boy who finds a sentient, mute red balloon.  If you haven't seen this beautiful film, then I recommend it!

4- Blog Book

Do you remember when I wrote to you about turning your blog into a memory book on a previous Miscellany Monday?  Well I tried it!  I think that they should give us better choices for the layout of pictures and posts in the book, but perhaps that is something they are working on, who knows.  Never the less, I was pretty happy with my memory book, it'll be something I'll treasure for a long time.

Happy Monday!

Winter Trees and Birds

Observing bare trees in the winter affords a great opportunity to see trees in a way we might not see them during other seasons when they're full of leaves.

Take your child/children out to explore the wonders of nature during the winter months and take note of:

  • Tree shapes.  Look at all those branches!  Are the trees in your area shaped the same, or are there a variety of different types, shapes and forms?
  • How bare trees dress the horizon.  Look at the sky through their bare branches.
  • Hold a scavenger hunt for nests.  Now with branches baring all, nests in trees pop out in all sorts of places.
Here is what we found.

We get lots and lots of beautiful Cardinals, especially in our yard.
Hope you enjoy your winter walk as you view all the types of trees, birds and nests in your area.

Out and About

Collection of random musings to help make interesting the mundane, enjoy!

)ONE)

We went to a large Corn Maze during the weekend and it was pretty neat.  We shot the corn canon, rode horses, played in a corn box, got lost in the corn maze (note to self-carry mosquito repellent)  My son loved it.

)Two)
My son and I were exploring some more around our new yard, which is a lot bigger than our previous backyard, and to our surprise we discovered this fella.

)Three)
After my Mr. M pulled all the weeds out of the yard, we were able to see the many flowers and shrubs that were hidden by them.  One is this American Beauty Berry, some call it French Mulberry.

I just learned that the roots, leaves, and branches of this plant were used by the Alabama, Choctaw, Creek,  Seminole and other Native American tribes for various medicinal purposes.  The roots, leaves and branches were made into decoction that was used in sweat baths to treat both malarial fevers and rheumatism.  The boiled plant parts were poured into a big pan that was placed near the patient inside a sweat-house  A similar decoction of the roots was used to treat dizziness and stomachaches.  The roots and berries were boiled and drunk to treat colic.
The American Beauty Berry is also an important food source for birds and other animals.

As I sat down enjoying the beautiful day, I saw this shape ) in the sky formed by a cloud...
Can you see it?

)Four)
And finally Yesterday we went rollerskating, I haven't roller skated since I was twelve, so that was fun.  Hope you all enjoyed your weekend!  Happy Monday!
